Description
Linguistic analysis of authentic materials has been the primary goal for corpus studies. Numerous studies have focused on the importance of using authentic texts, but only a few of them provided lesson plans reflecting empirical research. This study shows how business related periodical articles could be used in an EFL curriculum for advanced students. In order to achieve this, two steps were undertaken. One step included linguistic analysis of two specialized corpora, one written in English and the other in Serbian. Thus, two corpora consisting of business related periodical articles in English and Serbian were compiled and analyzed linguistically partly with the help of multiple computer programs and partly manually. The other step was designing teaching materials based on the research findings This corpus-based study provides valuable information beneficial for language pedagogy and course design. For example, through the lesson activities provided in this study, teachers can see how authentic texts and findings based on corpus analysis can be used effectively for designing teaching materials. The results of the analyses can also help EFL students become aware of semantic and syntactic properties of some grammatical constructions and their frequencies in this type of formal informative writing.
