Description
In today's expanding global markets, multinational business leaders understand that successful foreign expansion requires the use of highly linked networks involving various dynamic partnerships. A critical challenge for internationalizing firms is to understand and manage the multi-dimensional context of their relationships and resources within these networked partnerships. A unique relationship that firms have increasingly employed is the global public-private partnership (GPPP). GPPPs are important tools that have been used to align public needs with economic profits having many scholars contending that global public-private partnering could ultimately become a prevailing business model. This study analyzes the phenomena of the global public-private partnership (GPPP), specifically cross-sector collaborations (i.e. MNE/NGO alliances) abroad, through an exploration of the various processes by which one evolves. This evolution will be examined based on the following research questions: (1) What are the varying drivers behind corporate-NGO alliances in foreign markets? (2) Ultimately, what criteria can corporate managers use to decide when, where, how, and in what circumstances to partner with NGOs? Case study methods are used to examine the motivational components of four multinational corporations engaging in an MNE/NGO alliance. A classification typology of six motivational components surfaces based upon three areas for strategic implication - development of markets, access to partner resources, and the extension of corporate resources. The typology suggests continuous variations and interrelations between the subsequent attributes within each component and the practical elements related to firm activities. The findings address the call for an investigation of MNE/NGO alliances within foreign expansion by uncovering past and current corporate motivations behind engagement. There are many stages within any alliance, this study ultimately analyzes the phenomena through an exploration of the various processes by which they develop.
