Description
"Time is precious" is what we have learnt from our past. Life is always on the move and mobile technology has played a vital role in keeping everyone occupied when they are traveling. Walkmans, portable DVD players, MP3 players and now iPods have been an integral part of everyone's life. Learning a foreign language has never been an easy task. Foreign language can be made easy, if the learner is willing to dedicate the necessary time. Lot of efforts has been put to integrate the language learning into mobile platforms. Quizzes, sentence formations, guess the words, flash cards were some of the few methods, which effectively contributed towards language learning on the mobile platform. Two important factors considered in this thesis for language learning are providing a visual and audio feedback to language learners. Visual feedback is an essential part as it provides the learners the ability to see how an alphabet is written and audio feedback for listening to the pronunciation of the alphabets and practicing it. Existing language-learning applications on Android platform are quiz based and guessing the words, which are based on the clues provided by the application. Few other applications provide a rich set of libraries to translate sentences into foreign languages. However, these applications have not fully capitalized the capabilities of touch screen coupled with the power of mobile-based multimedia. This thesis project capitalizes on the competent features of a smart phone to provide an interactive language learning application. The application caters to language enthusiasts/learners helping them to write the alphabets using touch screen and hearing to its pronunciations. It has quizzes in the form of audio and visual representation of the alphabets. It provides a utility to create multiple language libraries, which can be plugged into client application, by installing the library on their Security Disk (SD) cards. This combines the multitude of communication and computing features into an advanced learning system.
