The Gene Wiki applies community intelligence to the gene annotation effort by providing a publicly available resource of human gene information that combines knowledge from various reliable sources. In order to increase the utility of the gene pages, a concept recognizer has been developed to effectively identify biomedical keywords pertaining to gene function and search for relevant hyperlinks in the Online Encyclopedia, Wikipedia. Here, the development process of the Concept Recognizer application is described. The finalized recognition algorithm has a linear complexity and it is capable of finding links for approximately 95% of the biomedical terms found in the text. Additionally, about 65% of the links are fully relevant while approximately 33% lead to ambiguous pages.
