Description
The CAST is used to gauge the oral proficiency for students of English, Spanish, Japanese, Hindi, French, Modern Standard Arabic, Persian, Mandarin Chinese, Iraqi Arabic and Egyptian Arabic. The thesis involves design and development of interfaces which will enable localizing the CAST (Computer Assisted Screening Tool) in any language. The main objective of the thesis is to develop a platform that can be used and extended to localize the CAST front-end in any language with minimum effort to aid test takers, raters, administrators, super-users and researchers to view the website in their language of preference. This is achieved through separation of locale specific information from the code and putting it in oracle database. This locale specific information is extracted from the database to generate a webpage dynamically. The CAST system is provided with GUIs which allow a super-user (a language translator) to insert and save the translated text into the database. The translated text stored in the database can also be edited through these GUIs. The interfaces (GUIs) and the database which are developed as parts of this thesis, allow localizing the CAST in any language without changing the underlying code.
