This thesis work carries out a study of IEEE 802.16 standards and presents a complete synchronization method for an OFDM communication system with asymmetric channel. Synchronization is important for receiver to successfully demodulate a received data. Timing synchronization is used to determine the arrival of data burst and the symbol boundaries whereas frequency synchronization is used to synchronize local oscillator to a carrier frequency. A transceiver model based on 802.16 OFDM PHY baseband is built for simulation and performance evaluation. Both uplink and downlink are implemented. Channel environment includes AWGN channel, multipath channel, and SUI channel model. The onetap equalizer is utilized for frequency domain channel estimation.
