This project is the integration of protein structure data from two online databases: Protein Data Bank Europe (PDBe) and the Structural Classification of Proteins (SCOP). For every PDB entry in the Protein Data Bank (PDB) there is a protein structure image in PDBe and a structure classification in SCOP. Over 66,000 protein structure images were extracted from PDBe and their JPEG files were uploaded in Wikimedia Commons (WC), a repository for freely licensed media. The images were categorized based on the hierarchical classification of proteins in SCOP to allow easy browsing and searching. The protein structure images are now available to worldwide users to access protein structure images for research and education. More importantly, as the main purpose of this project, the protein structure images were stored in Wikimedia Commons to make them accessible for Gene Wiki to provide structural biology data in PDB image galleries.
