Union staff unionization has existed in the United States of America for over 60 years. The purpose of this study is to examine the history of union staff unionization as well as discuss the current opinions regarding union staff unionization. Participants were asked why they or other union staff unionized. Fourteen participants were interviewed in this study along with several researchers who have studied union staff unionization. Participants in this study chose to organize into unions, or believed other union staff unionized, mainly for ideological reasons. Union staff also unionized in order to address issues surrounding their management, in response to negative work conditions, and to gain the right to negotiate or maintain benefits. Lastly, union staff unionize in response to the lack of internal structure or misguided vision internally within their union.
