The Torrey Sandstone of Middle Eocene age is widely exposed in the central coastal section of San Diego County. Interpretation of suites of sedimentary structures present within the Torrey suggests transgressional deposition in a northwest trending barrier beach complex. Subfacies representing deposition in foreshore, backshore, tidal flat, tidal channels and tidal inlet environments are present. Due to the relative preservation potential of the environments involved and the nature of the transgression, the tidal channel and tidal inlet deposits comprise the volumetrically largest percentage of the Torrey Sandstone.
