The picaresque novel has long been regarded as one of the paramount genres of literature. Throughout the novel the main character portrays society's ills during fifteenth century Spain and its colonies. The main character, having a questionable family background seems harmless as he circulates throughout the city and exposes the amoral qualities of society. The main characters' mishaps exemplify the difficulties most of the Spanish and colonial societies went through in order to fit in and live a decent life. In this work, the main objective is to compare the traditional picaresque novels, such as Lazarillo de Tormes and El canillitas with the contemporary picaresque novel, Ángeles del abismo and prove the hybridization process the main character goes through in order to survive. The present thesis consists of five chapters. The first chapter introduces the literary genre that is researched and its meaning. The second explains the origin of the picaresque literary genre and the importance it had on society during the fifteenth century. The third describes the urban setting the main character must get through in order to survive. The fourth chapter focuses on the hybridization the main character goes through in order to survive the Minotaur at the center of the urban labyrinth, which in the case of the colonial city, the main plaza. The fifth and last chapter concludes the thesis with a brief summary of the research
