The purpose of the study was to explore if institutions are providing advisors with the support advisors need to help them succeed in their role. Open-ended survey methodology was used for this research. The sample consisted of six academic advisors from a large public university in Southern California. It was found that the institution is meeting the basic needs of advisors, but the department is in need of more resources and advisors. Three conclusions were derived from the findings: (a) The Role of the Advisor Can Be Complex and Demanding, but the Purpose is Clear; (b) Advisors Want to Help; and (c) Academic Advising Requires More Resources. Advisors and institutions are encouraged to work collaboratively toward their common goal of promoting student success.
