The odontocetes, or toothed whales and dolphins, produce a wide repertoire of sounds. Their sounds have two main purposes, echolocation and socialization/communication. This document explains the characteristics of the different sounds the odontocetes produce and their sound production and reception mechanisms. Methods for classification of odontocetes' signature whistles, as well as methods for detection and filtering of odontocetes' sound signals are described. Matlab implementations and results of filtering and analysis of odontocetes' sound files are shown.
