The intention behind developing this tool was to utilize current technology for educational purposes. The GIS tool for learning about the Russian empire was developed with the intention of depicting important historical events and the lives of important figures during early 19th century Russia (i.e. during the Russian revolution) on a map. Anything described using images, videos and visual graphics is better understood and grasped by a person. Keeping this in mind this tool makes a good use of images, videos and web links along with an interactive GIS map to educate students more about the Russian empire at its last stages and some important historical figures of importance during that time. Map layers were created according to the requirement depicting geographical points of significance or polygon layers. The tool was made in such a way that students can perform things like adding layers, removing layers, adding points of significance, selecting and making new layers. The map also has a help tab giving more information on how to use the features. GIS technologies like JAVA, eclipse IDE and Map Objects - JAVA edition were used to develop this tool.
