This thesis introduces the three traditional approaches to what humor is and the various challenges for each approach. It argues that a variant of what is commonly called the "incongruity theory" is the best theory of humor we have thus far because it can account for more instances of humor than any other theory. In doing so the theory is defended against its various objections.
