Historical fashion is an area of study that is often overlooked as frivolous or superficial when it comes to studying history and historical cultures. Roman dress and identity reveal and reflect underlying beliefs and sometimes contradictory elements of Roman society--namely its glorification of traditional Roman virtues. This timeline explores changing fashion trends as way to trace changes in Roman values and efforts to assert social dominance. The timeline also discusses how the development and treatment of Rome’s national garment, the Toga, reflects the conflicts between traditional Roman virtue and status and the eventual break-down of a Roman identity., Final Digital Humanities assignment for Roman History (HIST 503), taught by Dr. Elizabeth Pollard.
