Computer programs were developed to automate de Vaucouleurs' method of galaxy scanning. As a test of these programs M101 was observed in blue of the UBV system. The high resolution small aperture scans were not successful, but good results were achieved at lower resolution using a larger aperture. It was found that the observations could be fit with an a1/4 relationship similar to the one used in elliptical galaxies.
