Two observations of the fiddler crab Uca crenulata (Lockington) formed the basis for this study: 1) Fiddler crabs feeding on the lower exposed beaches usually ran toward their general burrow region regardless of the direction from which they were approached (escape response); and 2) desiccated fiddler crabs, when displaced up the beach, would return to the general region of their burrows. The aims of the study were: 1) To describe the visual orientation of the adult U. crenulata to celestial stimuli, topography, and slope; and 2) to describe the behavior responses to the physical factors which maintain this species in its intertidal zone.
