Statement of the problem. The primary purpose of this project was to develop a method book for teaching beginning class clarinet at the fifth or sixth grade level. The general objectives of this method are (1) to initiate and stimulate a continued interest in the study of clarinet; (2) to develop a responsiveness to the rhythmic and melodic components of music, both as a listener and as a producer of music; (3) to teach concepts of musicianship with special emphasis on rhythmic understanding; and (4) to develop the motor skills involved in playing the clarinet. A secondary purpose was to present information on critical problems commonly confronting beginning clarinet instructors, which would be especially useful to teachers who are not specialists on the instrument.
