Two unidentified men stand on the sidewalk across the street from the Shabazz Sandwich Shop and Muhammad's Temple Number 26. The name of the shop is taken from the "Tribe of Shabazz," an ancient black nation according to the National of Islam. Elijah Muhammad, as leader of the Nation of Islam, established Muhammad's Temples using successive numbers. This temple was established between 1955 and 1959. After his death in 1975 the Nation of Islam was disbanded by his son but revived by Louis Farrakhan in 1981. This photograph is from the "Healings" album in the Peoples Temple Collection. Written on the inside front cover are the names Royal Mershon and Lula Mae Mershon.
