Description
This thesis is a study of how the imperialist system has evolved in the 21st century, specifically in the Americas. This thesis utilizes historical analysis to identify how a common set of fundamental interests have motivated American imperialism in Latin America throughout a number of distinct periods, as well as how the United States has pursued these interests through a range of different tactics which have changed over time. This analysis serves to contextualize contemporary American interests and action in Latin America, as well as how American imperialism has shaped Latin American politics, especially how Latin Americans have attempted to confront the power of the United States. The ultimate goal of this thesis is to demonstrate that American interests in Latin America have changed little with the passing of the Cold War, that it has pursued its time-tested interests through a range of strategies in the post-Cold War period, and that post-Cold War Latin American political movements have placed resisting American imperialism at the forefront of their political projects.
