It is well-established that news media play a key role in framing issues, disseminating elite framing of issues, and shaping public opinion. However, it is not yet clear how political elites can use their direct access to a broadcasting source to perpetuate their opinions not only in domestic news media, but internationally. This study aims to determine how political elites’ framing on social media affected news coverage of immigration issues in international media. Specifically, it investigates whether Donald Trump’s language on Twitter in regards to the Central American Caravans is replicated in the Mexican news source El Universal.
