Most types of noise can be eliminated using differential signaling. However, using differential signals can introduce common-mode noise which can lead to signal integrity problems. These problems can become especially noticeable at high speeds as they are introduced by skew between the differential pair. The skew can come in the form of driver timing discrepancies, trace length differences, and substrate inhomogeneity due to glass-weave effect. The designed EBG structure is applicable for filtering common-mode noise on differential lines by periodically stepping its even mode impedance while keeping its odd mode impedance constant. The filter design was built onto a circuit card and is compared with the simulation results. The time domain analysis and characterization of the filter has also been performed.
