Accounts differ as to whether De Neve was present but MacGurrin noted "I followed the account which lent itself most readily to a pictorial composition." One of ten murals depicting events in the history of California. They were originally created for the Los Angeles County Hall of Records in 1936 and 1937. All were removed from the building prior to its demolition on July 7, 1973. All are believed to be in storage for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
