The rock formation on the left was part of a volcanic vent, with caves high on a side. The "Lady of the Lake" effect can be seen from this angle (from the north) by looking below the flat spot at the top to see what look like a nose and lips in profile. The publisher's number in the upper left corner is 7637. At the bottom of the divided back is the message "On the line of the Overland Limited and Lake Tahoe steamers." The Union Pacific's Overland Limited ran from Chicago to San Francisco starting in 1887, stopping in Truckee, California. At Truckee a passenger could connect with the Lake Tahoe Railway and Transportation Company to get to Lake Tahoe where a small steamship delivered mail and passengers throughout the Lake area.
