Birds of various types, including chickens and ducks, walk and perch inside an aviary with a pool. Grider's Birdland was at the corner of Central and Pico, said in the Los Angeles Herald for December of 1910 to be the "latest of the classiest attractions." It was a combination of a pet store and a zoo, with animals other than birds, including fish, monkeys and dogs. Grider retired from the real estate business and began building "his dream." The approximate date is 1912.
