The motto "On the Road of a Thousand Wonders" on the back indicates that Santa Catalina Island was considered a destination for a promotion of The Coast Line-Shasta Route of the Southern Pacific Railroad. Brochures from 1907 and 1908 with this motto can be found, and a spur went to San Pedro, from which steamship ferries made regular trips to this Steamer Pier (built 1906). This aquarium was located at the Crescent Avenue end of the Pier. The publisher's number on the divided back is E 20. O. Newman Company operated from 1904 to 1918. The same image, differently colored, is on PC-001-190. The approximate date is 1907.
