The Spreckels Theatre opened in 1912, designed by Harrison Albright (1866-1932). The El Cortez Hotel was built in 1927, the first San Diego high-rise building, designed by the architectural firm of Albert Walker and Percy Eisen. The hand-colored photograph on this picture postcard was taken before the lit sign was erected on top of the El Cortez in 1937. The approximate date is the 1930s.
