Description
The inscription in hand printing identifies the animals as "Asiatic Elephants" at the "Zoological Gardens" in San Diego--Calif." In the photograph two elephants are standing behind reinforced pillars that keep their heads from reaching the fence behind which two men, two women, and three children are standing. The people appear to be reaching out to the trunks of the elephants that extend through the bars and over the fence, as if they were feeding the animals. In 2020 Asian elephants are classified as "vulnerable" by the IUCN Red List (International Union for Conservation of Nature). This is a Real Photo postcard (RPPC) made with Dops photo paper (as evidenced in the stampbox on the back of this card). The Real Photo process allowed photographers to take a "snapshot" and have it finished at a photo shop that printed it out on postcard backing for mailing. Dops photo paper was made from 1925 to 1942.
