The statue in the center of the fountain, "Woman of Tehuantepec," (La Tehuana) was created of Indiana limestone by Donal Hord (1902-1966) in 1935, when it was first seen at the California Pacific International Exhibition in this newly reconstructed courtyard. The House of Hospitality was originally built for the Panama-California International Exposition of 1915 as the Indian Arts Building (also known as the Foreign Arts or Foreign Liberal Arts Building), designed by architect Carleton M. Winslow (1910-1946). It was remodeled by Richard Requa (1881-1941) for the California Pacific International Exposition of 1935, when the second floor seen in this view of the courtyard was added. The building was later demolished and rebuilt in the same Spanish-Renaissance style in 1997, afterwards housing the Balboa Park Visitors Center, the El Prado Restaurant, the Balboa Park Gift Shop, and the San Diego Police Department storefront.
